A Fail Association/The Cherry Point "split" 7"
[Troniks]
Yet another one-sided 7", this time a split, comes from Troniks' recent deluge of vinyl releases. A Fail Association begins with "...Some Kind of Solitude": Raw harsh noise that's relatively lo-fi, using lots of rumbling distortion and cutting feedback for its brief yet repetitive duration. A great ending makes things close on an intentional note, which is always cool. The Cherry Point's track, "1983 Forever", is actually very similar, but in addition to feedback along with the rugged distortion there's also a low-end sort of hum that makes things a little bit more brooding, which I enjoy quite a bit. It creates an eerie atmosphere that this sort of work often lacks. The track cuts to a quick close, which tends to frustrate me, but otherwise it's enjoyable. The record comes with plain white labels in a simple sleeve xeroxed on light blue paper. The artwork looks really cool, it's just manipulated photographs and text, perhaps from a newspaper or magazine article, I can't tell what it is, but the visual aesthetic is nice, especially in cooperation with the typewriter lettering that has become so common with Troniks releases. Not bad. It could be better, but this isn't bad at all. I'm guessing that a very small number of these were pressed, so... collectors take note. (6/10)
Running time - 5:00 (approximately), Tracks: 2
[Notable tracks: both are nice, but The Cherry Point takes it for me]
