Ânsia de Vômito "It's Time for Them to Remember!" CD
[Kasamata]

This is some socially conscious death/grind out of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil that has the potential to be quite good but to my great dismay suffers from an absurdly lackluster recording that really holds back the power of the material. The drums and vocals dominate, mainly the vocals because they're thicker and more textured than anything else. The bass is almost impossible to hear, and the guitars have no force at all. I can't even put into words the weakness displayed by the guitars... it's literally indescribable. I've never heard such an odd guitar tone before, it's just not right... As far as their style, take a little bit off of every Napalm Death record and the result would probably be close to this. There's some slow, heavy death metal riffing, there are some straightforward grinding blasts, there's some dissonant riffing that heads in a slightly different direction, etc. They also use high screams to back the low growls of the lead vocals as well. Among the standouts are "Sexist Society" - the shortest and fastest track herein, combining blistering grind with a bit of a classic crossover vibe - and "Eternal Inability" - the longest track, and also one of the slowest, using lots of layered vocals (spoken and screamed) along with darker, more sinister riffing that ends the disc on a very different note. Great stuff. The layout could look better visually, but there's some cool imagery and information going on. The front cover shows an image of a stone fountain, and inside is some Portuguese text with an English translation regarding the legends surrounding these fountains and how they came to be a part of the water supply in Brazil. Inside the booklet there's a span of pictures where the band members' faces are blended into the faces of these stone fountains, and it actually looks pretty cool. Most of the lyrics are in English, and I'm impressed by this band's message, which is uncommon for death metal. Most of the songs deal with socio-political content such as pollution, sexism, corruption, bullshit politicians, war, and a generally bleak view of the state of the world. "Amputating possibilities, Massive attacks, The oil is not just on the water but in our consciousness, Manipulated death, nature cries, Aggressions by civilized mankind, More and more factories throwing death in the air, My son will not live, Destruction everywhere." In addition to all of this there are enormous thanks lists (in Portuguese) and contact information is listed for tons of organizations from animal rights groups like The Vegan Society to Green Peace Brazil or Anti-Racism Action. Very cool. Sadly the production doesn't do them justice at all, so even the mere 35 minutes of material here is hard to sit through. I'd really like to hear something else from these guys under better conditions, because they've got some great ideas and I think they could throw down the music to match... but not yet. (4/10)
