On Broken Wings - Some of Us May Never See the World

On Broken Wings "Some of Us May Never See the World" CD
[Eulogy]

To me this band sounds like they would very badly like to be Converge circa "When Forever Comes Crashing" or "The Poacher Diaries", but mixed with burly death metal or something: Harsh distorted vocal screams, thick and plodding metalcore with lots of tempo changes and a mix of chugging rhythms and discordant guitar textures, the occasional chaotic run or layer of experimental texture, and so on. They certainly unleash some far slower areas that just grate along with a few death metal-esque growls, and there are some fucking wicked singing vocals too, so that's a nice change right there... but aside from that most of the stuff does tend to sound Converge-y to me. I guess in general it's more straightforward and moderately paced, with increased levels of subtle melody, but I can't call it original. And honestly the Converge sounding stuff is the most annoying portion of the disc. I really like some of the massive mosh riffs and the more melodic areas, and the singing vocals are fucking great - I don't know why the fuck they don't use them more often, because somehow the singing blends perfectly with the brutality of the music, and it's far more memorable than the screaming. The recording isn't too bad. It's slightly muddy, and the vocals tend to stand out from the music a little, but for the most part they're on the right track. The drums sound pretty natural, the guitars are well textured, and the bass tone is sweet, mixed right in the heart of it all. I do like the sound of the distortion on the vocals, I just wish it blended in with the music more. The layout is fucking awesome on this thing. The outer packaging has photos of a suicide note and a man's feet dangling about eight inches from the floor next to a tipped over chair alongside faded background textures of fabric, and the inner spread has the fabric appearing at its normal color saturation while additional sets of faded photos that lead up to the suicide appear in a row at the bottom of each page. This imagery might suggest that the lyrics are immature and commonplace, but that's thankfully not the case. "Dreams of knowledge for something new, while all noises are that of invitation. The vision of achievement blinds the vision of morality, science passed off as emotion. Not all things are worth experience, 'and the world is full of dreamers'." Promising. I'm not 100% into it, and I think they need more cohesion to their writing and dynamic shifts. But this band has a lot going for them. Just uet more singing vocals please. Please. Oh, and there's a little hip-hop thing hidden at the end of the disc and it's actually pretty fucking good. I'm shocked. Maybe they should even fuck with that stuff a little more? Who knows? (6/10)
