Initial Reaction (almost) discography…

Initial Reaction (almost) discography...The mighty Coregasm first posted about the absolutely awesome northern Virginia hardcore band Initial Reaction three years ago, regarding their sole 7" release, and after I posted a comment on the write-up I was lucky enough to have someone from the band get in touch with me and send me a copy of that 7" as well as their rare 1992 demo cassette. Sadly my old computer is long since dead, so I don't have access to any of those emails to know specifically who to thank for this kind act, but I hope they stumble across this post and see my appreciation!

According to this MySpace page, Initial Reaction formed in the summer of 1988 and quickly put out a four-track demo (the only output not covered in this post) before undergoing a few lineup changes and releasing the "Brace Yourself" demo in 1989. This demo contained six songs recorded on an eight-track and totally laid the groundwork for the surprisingly hard-hitting and in your face tone of the 7" (which is obviously their most prominent recording): Straight metallic hardcore with traditionally-based chord progressions amped up by chunky grooves, burly vocals, and a toughguy sort of lyrical angle. The aforementioned self-titled 7" was then released by Cornerstone Productions in 1990, taking things in a more blatantly aggressive direction across the board (and incredibly successfully so, I might add), making for an underrated classic precursor to the metallic hardcore sound that would become increasingly popular throughout the 90's—and on through to today.

For some reason the bio on MySpace makes no mention whatsoever of the 1992 demo, and gives off the impression that the band broke up in 1991, which is odd. I'm hoping someone in the know will spot this write-up and drop some more knowledge in the comments section. Maybe there were some additional lineup changes, or maybe some of the band members just aren't as fond of the final demo due to the slight shift in approach? I'm really not sure, since all I have is the pro-printed cassette itself, no artwork or anything of that nature. All I can say for certain is that the song titles on this demo suggest a more socio-political and thought provoking approach to the lyrical content ("Satyam", "Ecocide", etc.), with hints of singing starting to blend into the vocals. Of course this means the music also branches out a bit, with more of a metal direction and some little rocked out riffs with melodic undercurrents here and there, but for my money the main core of the band's chugging, tactful grooves is still right there, so... I'm all over it! Here's one track from each of these releases to give you a taste:

Initial Reaction "Find it Quick"
Initial Reaction "Bustin' Out"
Initial Reaction "Satyam"

Don't talk shit you can't back up.
Get too close, get an uppercut.
Why don't you ever shut up?
If it went down, you would be fucked.
You've got to know, you'll never win.
You're just fighting a war with no end...

All of this stuff is probably pretty damn hard to find in its original form these days, and I don't even see any listings on eBay at the moment, so... good luck getting your hands on any of the original vinyl or cassettes unless any of the band members happen to have some more leftovers to sell after all these years! Here's a .zip file that contains the 7" and both demos outlined above, and it's all total fucking gold, so I hope you enjoy the material:

  2. Initial Reaction was a great band and I was fortunate enough to have seen them a few times between 89-93 when I was at college in DC. They played pretty often at a place called the Safari Club which was a total dump. They opened for a lot of great bands that came through DC at the time like Judge, Chain of Strength and Killing Time. I actually just picked up their 7” on eBay since my old one got lost in one of the many moves I made during my post-college years. Thanks for posting on them - they were pretty influential on the DC scene and deserve the mention. Cheers!

  3. Carlos, I agree!  I was so shocked that this post had no comments all day yesterday!?

  4. Wow, I should have stocked up on their 7” back in 1990. eBay gold.

I remember going into SMASH! records in Georgetown, Washington DC every weekend and looking for new hardcore vinyl and seeing multiples of their 7” each and every visit. I even remember laughing when it went on ‘sale’.

I saw them a few times live and have to say…I was never impressed. Generic. They are certainly a part of DC / VA hardcore history, but they are no Four Walls, Device or Worlds Collide.

  11. I saw Initial Reaction many times at the Safari Club.  Great band, great memories.  I have the 7”.  Mine doesn’t have a cover.  It never had one.  John Cornerstone sold a few of them before he had the covers back from the printers.  He said to ask later for the cover, but they were out of them when I asked.

    Gut Instinct ruled as well.

  12. Greetings from California… this is Tom, IR bass palyer. Glad to hear you got the 7” and Demo copies. I’ve got some more 7” copies in the garage that would get more turntable time elsewhere. Going to hold on to a couple but can part with a few for anyone that would be stoked to have a copy.

Fun times back then, hope to put the bass rig back to more use in the future… My 2yr. old is definitely eyeing it also… for now he’s just banging a floor tom.

In other news you can find Seth Ford Young, IR vocals, on-line all over the place these days. He’s been playing bass ever since, most recently with Tom Waits, Oakland based Guerrilla Hi-Fi and many other great bands.

  13. Sick band. Bought the 7” back in ‘91 and saw them open for Breakdown later that year. The ONLY time I ever caught them live.

Someone used the term ‘generic’ to describe their sound in one of the comments above. Perhaps you could find some similarities if you compared them to today’s ‘hardcore’ bands. But they were doing their thing 20 years ago. And I can think of only 1 or 2 other DC/VA bands from that era who were into playing ‘heavy’ hardcore. Socially-charged bands like World’s Collide and Four Walls Falling were very typical of the DC/VA scene by then. Sorry, but I’ll take no-frills hardcore over a musical sermon any day.

FYI… The guitarist, Josh, was in another sick hardcore band called Harsh Truth. Fans of IR, Gut Instinct and Next Step Up should check them out.

  15. Hey Tom. Not sure if you will stumble across this again but it’s John Schmitt saying hi. Former guitar and JMU cohort. I still miss those years around DC and the scene in general. It’s cool that there are quite a few who share the memories. I got Josh’s number recently and am going to check in with him as we are both in NOVA. Take care of yourself…
