Akaname “Filthlicker” CD

Akaname - Filthlicker"Filthlicker" is the debut EP from New Zealand's Akaname on Debello Recordings, tearing through five tracks of intriguingly diverse and jarring metalcore in about 20 minutes. I've always been very picky when it comes to the more discordant and chaotic side of the "metalcore" realm, but there's something about these tracks that works very well. For one thing, the recording is nice and dense, and the vocals have a harsher and more aggressive tonality than the borderline irritating cackled screams and shrieks that often plague this niche of the genre, so there's a certain warmth and ferociousness going on that certainly adds to the overall impact. But they also tend to throw in a little more variety than usual as well, and without losing sight of transitions or the big picture of the songs' sense of feeling. So, while there are plenty of the expected quick shifts from chugging rhythmic fits to bursts of flurried notes, there are also some subtle samples and electronic noise textures beneath the surface, as well as some churning death metal-infused riffs—complete with warped pinch harmonics and thick, gnashing picking patterns that make for some surprisingly meaty moments. Much more interesting than the legions of bands out there tossing out fifth-rate Botch/Dillinger ripoffs, you know?

Akaname "The Garden Path"

Oddly enough the band's vocalist left shortly after the recording of this EP, and they've decided to carry on as an instrumental act, so... I guess we'll see how that plays out when their full-length hits the streets. Hopefully they won't lose any steam.

  2. The ‘metalcore’ reference to Botch and Dillinger is just lazy.

This band clearly sounds nothing like metalcore. This is far more technical grindcore. Honestly - can we get fans of this particular genre to write reviews on said genre.

  3. Learn to read.  I specifically said that they were NOT like the Botch/Dillinger followers.  And, sorry, but “metalcore” existed long before the makeup wearing toddlers that are so popular under said banner today.  Anyone in my age range should understand where I’m coming from with that mention, and it’s not like I didn’t call out their variety with the noise textures and death metal riffing.  To say they sound “nothing like metalcore” is laughable.  The problem is there are like 5,000 niches of “metalcore”, from shit like Madball to Damnation A.D. to the aforementioned Botch/Dillinger, and then some.

If you could do such a better job, start your own site.

  5. anyone who gets so irate and offensive over labels needs to get some serious life, pronto.

anyways, i’d call this “semi-chaotic metalcore with burly vocals”, and i hope i’ve just hurt someone’s feelings.

speaking of vocals - good call, they make a whole lotta difference here. i wouldn’t be half as into this if they were of the skinny-dude “screamo” variety. good stuff.

  6. Well, everyone knows that Journey is the greatest “technical grindcore” band of all time, and if you listen extremely closely in the highest of high-end headphones you can hear the similarities, so…

  8. seriously tho, when i listen to Journey on headphones i am mesmerized by the total mastery of all the instruments. that bass is tight as fvck, etc. no band is more technically smokin.

  9. Hahaha, i just found out that the vocalist is a chick. Nice, considering it sounds like she has way more balls than the typical metalcorecrooner.

  10. listen Monarch. The babe looks soooo cute. But her vocals sounds like there is monster behind the mic.

  11. Go to the Myspace page, listen to the first couple bars of “The Animus Obscene,” and then come back and repeat that “nothing like Dillinger” bullshit.  “Technical grindcore”?  Sorry, but I heard ONE blastbeat in the track that was posted, and it lasted for all of less than two seconds.  Jesus.

  12. Yeah, like omg. Jesus. For fucks sake. What are you thinking? omg. retard. jesus.

    Previous poster = idiot.

  13. we appreciate the review…. thank you :)

in New Zealand we are sitting in the ‘Experimental Tech Grind’ camp!

our new material seems to be heavier and more tech but at the same time, the it also has a lot of neurosis/cult of luna influence….

we move from New Zealand to Melbourne, Australia next month….we will be recording our full length there, this year… should be sweet. and DEVASTATING!!!!

    stay tuned!!

  15. i think Akaname is more groove/flow oriented than technically pummeling… they still got the tech time-sigs etc, but its not a brutasaurus rex like - say, Destroyer Destroyer, SWWAATS, Robinson etc.
