Ghidrah “1996 demo” CS

Ghidrah - 1996 DemoEver heard of this band? No? Well rest assured, you're not alone. I picked up this demo from Very Distribution seven or eight years ago on a whim because I was trolling for new bands to check out and this tape was being compared to Candiria at the time. Aside from a hefty dose of creativity and plenty of odd time signatures and quick stylistic shifts, I disagree, it actually sounds a hell of a lot more like the almighty Burn (to the point where, if you like Burn, there's very little reason not to be all over these tracks), but whatever the case: This demo is incredible and I can't believe this band passed by unnoticed.

So who were they? I honestly don't know shit about 'em other than what's printed inside the demo: Bee J on vocals, Mark 1 on guitar, Napoleon on bass, and Danielito on drums; recorded at Raw Recordings by Jean-Christophe Santalis in the summer and autumn of 1996; and a New City, NY P.O. Box address listed alongside two (914) phone numbers for contact information. That's it. The last two tracks below aren't listed on the cover, and the banter at the start of the live track (whose complete title I can't make out due to guitar feedback) mentions an alleged album that the band was working on, but I've never been able to document whether or not said album might actually exist. Just the other day I emailed the recording studio where the demo was tracked just in the off chance that someone there might have even a faint smidge of information on that topic, but that's all I've got to go on for now. If you know anything at all about these guys, definitely shoot me a line.

Meanwhile, enjoy the jams:

1. "Phoenix"
2. "I Am Halfsick of Shadows"
3. "Waltz: Golden Staircase"
4. "Indian Caravan"
5. "Ashes & Garlic" (unlisted, recorded live)
6. "Outro" (unlisted)

As for side notes, apparently Handsome did in fact record a follow-up full-length that was never released. Someone out there has to have this, and that someone needs to hook me up immediately. Seriously, if you've got a quality copy of the recordings, I'll pay for that shit. No joke. I simply must hear those songs. There's just no fuckin' around about that! So please, if you have that material, send me an email—I'd really appreciate it.

Also note that former Worlds Collide vocalist Matt Burger left a comment on that post a little while back correcting some misinformation that other folks had speculated about in earlier comments as far as the band's first show, their demo recordings, and so on. Interesting stuff.

Comments

  1. This is really fucking good. It actually reminds me less of Burn, and more of a really good version of Orange 9mm. I miss this style of hardcore so much.

  2. You know, this shit is good. At first I didn’t like the vocals, even though the music is undeniably cool, but after repeated listens I’ve grown to really like this. Keep it up with these demos, you’re unearthing some very cool tunes…

  3. It seems that perhaps this was a side project featuring members of Atlas Shrugged, who I’ve discovered sounded quite similar.  I’m in the process of tracking down all of the Atlas Shrugged material as we speak.  I had only heard them on compilations back in the day but I just downloaded their 1998 demo and it’s fucking sweet…

  4. Atlas Shrugged were from the Rockland County area, and put out a full length and 7” or two on their own label Trip Machine, the singer Chris posts on the Rev board on occasion.  The music was heavy on the Burn worship, but the singing never was up to the standard set by Chaka.  The best stuff that AS put out was a split on Moo Cow records.  the singing finally found it’s stride.

  5. Hey anonymous - who was the Moo Cow split with? I’m curious.

Heh - Moo Cow. I forgot about that label for a minute! What a freakin’ name that was…

  6. The split was with New Day Rising

  7. i just came across this blog - thanks for giving an unknown band their due.  I saw these guys a few times while i was in school upstate and I always thought this was one of the more original bands that no one was ever going to hear.  I think i was right.

  8. im not sure if anyone will come across this little message but yes ghidrah was a hybrid of atlas shrugged and GMK members. actually it was GMK part 2. just with a new drummer…thean(gmk drummer) ended up playing with atlas shrugged. we recorded the aforementioned demo and recorded an albums worth of material after that. ive been wanting to do something with it…maybe ill set up a myspace inorder for whomever reads this to become acquainted with Ghidrah. if you wish me to keep you updated of anything i do with the music…shoot em an email and ill let you know.

thank you for the kind review.

  10. Realise this is well old, but Ghidrah were a New Zealand band from mid 90s. Fantastic live. Kind of grindcore. Their myspace is: http://www.myspace.com/ghidoragh

Guess they had to differ the spelling!

Er yeah, England or something. Close enough.

  11. Also, there’s another Ghidrah from Lafeyette.

  12. hah hah…i meant new zealand. really i did. oops.

so yah we (Ghidrah ) never released the album.
but if someone magically comes across this message, email me if you want a digital download of the album. for free yah. i think maybe 4 people have a copy of the thing. and yes, we (Atlas Shrugged) are still trying to finish up the damn discog. It will be out hopefully before we are all senior citizens…which isn’t that far away for me.
