Deadguy “Fixation on a Coworker” CD

Deadguy - Fixation on a CoworkerSo, as mentioned, I had a handful of people suddenly request some Deadguy, and here's some Deadguy. Having never been terribly fascinated by the noisier and more caustic side of the metallic hardcore genre, I have to give credit where due and state that "Fixation on a Coworker", the band's first and only full-length, did pretty much light the spark for this entire genre in 1995. It's actually quite surprising how infrequently the band gets mentioned these days with regard to the sheer number of acts biting off from that basic framework—though it's just as well, because unlike Deadguy, most of those groups eat shit.

You probably know the drill: Members from the almighty Rorschach (classic), No Escape (who I really ought to be posting about, since their split 7" with Turning Point is essential), and Lifetime; members later went on to Kiss it Goodbye and Family Man (the latter of which has yet to properly release any material); etc. (Playing Enemy is also often billed as an ex-Deadguy outfit, but I believe they're simply ex-Kiss it Goodbye. Yes? No? Anyone?) But rather than the typical and generally hollow "crazy go nuts" approach that's so popular today, Deadguy was much more of a genuine article: Creating viciously intense material that harnessed far more emotion and feeling, not to mention diversity... and a hearty dose of hyped up Amphetamine Reptile influences. Strong lyrics, too!

Deadguy "Doom Patrol"
Deadguy "Riot Stairs"

I'm surprised people are having trouble finding this record, overseas or not, as it's still easily available. If you're interested in new copies, RevHQ has some sort of weird limited edition repress with screenprinted alternate artwork. (Say what?) But anyway, I'd also definitely recommend their first two EP's, which are damn solid and available on one handy CD (I still need to pick that fucker up myself, come to think of it). Screw that "Screamin' With the Deadguy Quintet" crap, though. Recorded sans the two most crucial founding members, it's simply not the same... and I never could get into it:

Kiss it Goodbye is actually back in action now, apparently planning scattered shows later this year, while Family Man is allegedly recording a handful of songs to be released this year as well. So... if you dig the tunes above, keep an eye out for all of that, too.

  1. I agree with everything you said, 100%. In their prime, this band was a vicious animal, damn near attacking the crowd live. I love this record, but have to say that the two 7"s are the shit for me…

  2. damn, didn’t know this was a rarity these days. considering it was put out by Victory during the heyday of the label…I mean you couldn’t avoid the label if you tried during that time…Strife, Snapcase, Earth Crisis, Integrity.  Am I really that old?

  3. Nah, it’s not very rare at all, but a bunch of people requested a Deadguy post, so… I obliged.

  5. people seem to have forgotten about this band, i bet younger kids into all these current crappy “chaoticore” bands don’t even know who they were. maybe they’ll get a little history lesson with this (though i doubt any of them are checking this blog out) and the rest of us can get a little sting of nostalgia. not the greatest band that ever walked the planet, but i’ll never forget the day i first heard their shit. put me in a whole new mind set. yeah, and the lyrics are cool too.

  7. Hey I’m glad you gave this due mentioning cause this band was great in their days.  I always was a big fan of this and Kiss it Goodbye.  Another good noisy band from that time was Jesuit.

  9. Yup, that No Escape / Turning Point split is all fucking time. Two of the greatest bands ever. Period.

  10. re: deadguy
hear, hear! deadguys’s _Work Ethic_ ep found its way back into my hardrive about a year or two ago and i have since been steadily amazed at myself for not supporting Deadguy more vocally before said resurrection. while the No Escape split w. Turning Point is, as you say, essential, it is in the digression towards brutal and aggressively sarcastic heaviness that Deadguy excells; this brutality and strange vacuum of praise in said brutality’s wake make a deadguy post more revelant than a NE/TP post. fanks, Aversion

  11. Andrew: Nice work on the Deadguy stuff. I clearly remember being a record reviewer on a small daily in 1995 (my second year out of journalism school) and being able to slip in the occasional metal/hardcore review into an otherwise “family” publication. Whoever was doing PR at Victory at the time sent me “Fixation on a Co-worker” and I was floored. Honestly, at that time, no one was doing anything of this nature. Smart, sarcastic but absolutely riveting and crushing at the same time. 95 percent of the bands aping this style today can’t hold Deadguy’s jock. Thanks again for a blast from the past. Gotta go buy another copy as my last one broke.

  12. re: Playing Enemy
I’m not sure if I remember this correctly, but I think initially they had Keith on guitar for a little while. But as of now it’s really just ex-Kiss it Goodbye, who I am very much looking forward to hearing new stuff from, now that they are apparently back together.

  13. this album is pivotal for the hardcore genre. waaaay to many bands bite their style & dont give credit in their interviews. awesome news that Kiss It Goodbye is back together. i anxiously await a new release from them AND Family Man.

    good article andrew.

  15. has anyone got deadguy lyrics they can post online? thanks a lot!

  16. Just stumbled upon this site (kicks ass BTW).  I remember the first time seeing Deadguy at some WSOU metal show in 96’.  Tim Singer has an awesome stage prescence- “are you fucking gun crazy?”  Some of my favorite lyrics ever come from Fixation.. “wanna be rock and roll…”- classic.  I saw KIG in Philly looking for that same energy, but it just wasn’t Deadguy.  Any new word on Family Man releases?

  17. Curious about why most people seem to dislike “Screaming with…”

    What’s wrong with that record?

I personally like everything Deadguy put out.

  18. “Screamin…” to me just wasnt Deadguy. Seeing them during that time period sucked. It just wasnt the same without Keith and Tim…oh well….any news on kiss it goodbye reunion or Family Man would rule!

  20. Such a good record. I’m glad Deadguy is still unknown, though. Even though they broke up in ‘97, I’d hate if all those fucking scene kids attached themselves to Deadguy. Metallic hardcore, not fucking screamo.
