Marax - Rising Sun of the Morning After

Marax "Rising Sun of the Morning After" 3
[NCC]

Here's a 3" CD of the harsher side of Marax, but this definitely marks the project's first step towards a more conceptually involved and stylistically coherent harsh side. First up is "Inches From Your Sleeping Face", which is about four-and-a-half minutes of very well executed harsh noise using some droning feedback, gritty distortion, and nice, subtle low-end. "Oral Sex With a .357" is the longest track at over 10 minutes, following a similar path of atmospheric harsh noise that's thick on low-end rumbles balanced out by fluttering midrange and the occasional higher-end squeals. It gets a little tiresome beyond the first half but is still better than average for this style of noise. "Blood Drenched and Smiling Into the Sun" is the harshest of the three tracks, bringing in more of a piercing treble that cuts in along with some insane cackling vocals deep in the mix, making for a rather disturbing piece of work. The CD-R comes in a 3" slim jewel case with a simple black and white insert printed from a high-end color printer. Some of the text is slightly hard to read inside over the busy background image of dead bodies, but it looks pretty good. Having been following Marax for years at this point, I tend to prefer his more ambient pieces... but that could be a changing opinion based on this material. I'm pleasantly surprised to admit that this is Marax's finest harsh work to date. Very nice. (7/10)
